Malabar spinach, also known as Basella alba or Indian spinach, is a fast-growing tropical vine that produces thick, succulent leaves and stems. It is not a true spinach but belongs to the Basellaceae family.Malabar spinach thrives in hot, humid climates and is extremely heat tolerant, making it well-suited for summer cultivation in warm regions where regular spinach may not grow well. It is a perennial in the tropics but grown as an annual in temperate areas. The leaves and stems are edible, with a mild, fresh, earthy flavor and subtle notes of pepper and citrus. They can be eaten raw in salads, stir-fried, boiled, or added to soups, stews, and curries. The mucilaginous texture makes Malabar spinach useful as a thickener. It is popular in Asian, Indian, and African cuisines. Nutritionally, Malabar spinach is a good source of vitamins A and C, fiber, iron, calcium, and antioxidants. It has medicinal uses as well, with the leaves used topically for skin irritations and the roots for digestive issues.
